LEED – Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design

LEED is the US certification system for rating sustainable buildings and was developed in 1998 by the US Green Building Council (USGBC) to promote standards and technologies associated with green construction, and to encourage the transformation of existing properties.

LEED certification was based on the British BREEAM system and is now internationally recognised as a framework for planning, constructing and operating green buildings. It is used in 40 countries worldwide.

Buildings are rated by awarding points for individual criteria. There are a maximum of 110 points across six categories. The LEED system applies throughout the building lifecycle.
