HQE – Haute Qualité Environnementale

In France, developers and construction companies are also being encouraged to rethink and optimise their activities in order to boost ecological quality. One instrument is the HQE method, which has been tested on construction projects since 1994 and applied by the HQE Association since 1997.

HQE certification covers three phases: brief, design and implementation. Audits are carried out at the end of each of the three phases, focusing on two key factors: the ecological management of construction projects and sustainable building design.

To obtain HQE certification it is necessary to attain at least 30 points out of a possible 110 in 14 categories. Mandatory categories relate to the avoidance of nuisance and reducing energy and water use. Here at least 19 points out of a possible 45 must be achieved. For the remaining categories, the developer is able to select those that best fit the building’s profile and user requirements.
