CASBEE – Comprehensive Assessment System for Building Environmental Efficiency

CASBEE certification was designed by the Japan Sustainable Building Consortium (JSBC) in 2001. It uses building environmental efficiency (BEE) as a basis for assessment and is tailored to real estate needs in Japan and Asia.

CASBEE is composed of four assessment tools for each phase in a building’s lifecycle, from design and construction through to operation, renovation and demolition. It is designed to accommodate a wide range of uses (offices, schools, apartments, etc.) and is based on the principles behind BREEAM and LEED.

Assessment criteria

  • Energy efficiency
  • Resource efficiency
  • Indoor environment
  • Local environment

The sustainability of a building is measured using a performance assessment of the building environment derived from the relationship between building environmental quality and performance (Q for quality) and building environmental loadings (L for loadings). Building Environmental Efficiency (BEE = Q/L): The higher the Q value and the lower the L value, the more efficient and therefore more sustainable the building is.
